Now I might be biased, but Van Gogh was an amzing painter in his own time. His use of color and abstract lines truly does lend to an expressionistic style. While his use of line was very soft it was still unusual, and that would be somthing I would take for my design. Though my design is monochrome and very angular more in the style of Calgari.
